Northern Essex Community College

Northern Essex Community College (NECC) is a two-year, state assisted college, located in Essex County in northeastern Massachusetts. The college serves residents of the Merrimack Valley including Southern New Hampshire.

This school is one of 15 community colleges in the Massachusetts Higher Education system. It offers post-secondary education through the associate degree level. NECC also includes career programs in areas such as nursing and allied health, computers, criminal justice, paralegal studies, and deaf studies.

Students at Northern Essex Community College can choose to attend a transfer program if they want to start their education at Northern Essex and transfer for their junior and senior years, and eventually earn a bachelor's degree or higher. The college also offers developmental courses designed to prepare students for college-level work.

NECC has a diverse student mass, 62% of which is consisted by female students, 28% of the students are Hispanic and 48% of the students are older than 25.

Northern Essex Community College serves 16,000 full and part-time students each year.

NECC is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc., through its Commission on Institutions of Higher Education.

Northern Essex Community College opened its doors to 186 students in the fall of 1961. It held its classes in the then-former Greenleaf Elementary School on Chadwick Street in Bradford. Most of its students were recent graduates of Haverhill High School as well as some high schools in surrounding towns. The college was very popular from the start. The College Haverhill campus was built in the bucolic setting off Route 110 in 1971.

The college has a rural 106-acre Haverhill Campus, with its location set at 100 Elliott St. The campus features seven campus buildings. The buildings include a state-of-the art Technology Center and the innovative Behrakis One-Stop Student Center. Currently there are three locations in the nearby city of Lawrence: The Dimitry Building, The Louise Haffner Fournier Education Center and NECC Riverwalk, which is the college's newest location. An Allied Health and Technology Center is currently being built by the Northern Essex Community College.

NECC offers over 70 associate degrees and certificates, categorized within 15 areas of study. The areas include Business, Art & Design, Computer & Information Sciences, Science, Physical Education and many others.

This college has many Student Clubs & Organizations the students can join for learning or fun. However, the rule says that all student clubs and organizations must be officially recognized before they sponsor activities or use the name of the College in association with their activities.

The college's Student Enrichment Program exists to provide students with the opportunity to explore self directed activities. The program was developed by the Student Senate in 1993, mainly for students who wish to maximize their college experience by developing their leadership skills or confronting issues of importance to community college students. Through this program, students will be able to build a foundation of leadership and social skills that will improve the quality of their student life at Northern Essex Community College.

The Student Engagement Center offers students the chance to explore new interests, make new friends and develop talents and leadership skills. Students will be able to achieve those goals through a variety of activities, programs, and services, some of which include festivals, concerts, movies, lectures, Student Success Seminars, academic and special interest clubs and performing arts clubs.

The college's strong integrative Developmental Education Program links foundation courses together to helps students successfully complete required classes. It offers additional support to disadvantaged students in order to help them succeed. And it works closely with the local population to ensure that the college offers programs that are valuable to the larger community. The college also offers flexible course scheduling, and allows the students to complete degrees or certificates at a pace suitable for their busy lives.
